Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend a conference for women leaders. The founder, Cherelle Johnson, formed her organization with the goal of empowering Christian women to achieve their goals and offer their unique gifts and talents to the world. Several of the speakers, including Pastor Chris Johnson, spoke of the importance of the words you speak to yourself and encouraged the practice of daily affirmations.
I was really inspired by the potential of that practice. I think this is important for women, especially in the church where our dreams, talents, giftings, voices, and goals don’t always get the affirmation or encouragement they deserve.
Because of our past, our cultural conditioning, and the general difficulty of being human (!), deception can sound so settled and even holy to us.
Here are a few examples:
If I make a mistake, I’m worthless.
I have to continually prove my worth to God and to others.
My place with God is precarious. He’s continually disappointed with me.
God is always shaking his head at me and frustrated with me.
I am ultimately alone.
There isn’t enough __ for today (time, energy, wisdom).
I am the only one struggling in this way.
I get so angry when I think about what these lies steal from us and how they are so far from God’s great compassion, mercy, and care for us.
God created you for a purpose, and small or big, it makes a difference! I think if we could see the effect we have on the world around us, we would be astounded!
I wrote out a few of the affirmations I’ve been thinking about. These are on my refrigerator and I’m trying to get my kids to say them or at least hear them from me.
Want to join me? You can use these as a starting point and then ask God to show you your own that you can speak over yourself today. Drop me a comment and share your affirmations with me. I’d love to hear them!

Mary,
May I use these for the ladies at the Montana Womens Prison? We are having a 3 day Spiritual retreat the first weekend in December and these would be perfect.
Thank you
