I don’t know how God speaks to you. For me, it’s often in the form of repeated themes from a variety of sources. I hear something in a counseling session. I hear it again in a sermon. I read it in Scripture. I hear it on a podcast or in a book. I talk it over with a friend. Slowly, a truth begins to reshape me.
A theme for me lately has been inner wisdom. I think of this verse:
“Surely you desire integrity in the inner self, and you teach me wisdom deep within. ” (Psalm 51:6 CSB)
Even as a 44-year-old women, I often look around for someone wiser with the right training or “authority” to show up and save me or direct me. But what if that person is me? What if God has poured himself and his wisdom into me through his Spirit so that I can show up wise, understanding, gentle, and humble for myself and the people in my care?
In the season of my life, I am learning to trust the wisdom that God has grown in me. I am learning not to be constantly tossed to and for by other people’s opinions. I’m trying not to be motivated by anxiety or worry, but by a settled, peaceful wisdom.
Part of wisdom is also knowing when I need help and asking for counsel or prayer from people I trust.
When I understand this for myself, it also frees me from trying to “save” other people. I don’t have to give advice when it’s not asked for. I can encourage others to seek God and hear his wisdom for themselves. This also impacts how I parent my children.
God’s wisdom is never pushy, but rather gentle:
“Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom.” (James 3:13 CSB)
God’s wisdom calls out for anyone who will listen and seek after it:
“Wisdom calls out in the street; she makes her voice heard in the public squares. ” (Proverbs 1:20 CSB)
Our pastor, in this sermon Sunday, said we need to think of God’s wisdom not as an IV that we hook up to occasionally, but as the very blood that courses through our veins. I love that picture!
Today I’m grateful for God’s great patience with me, his mercy in teaching me these same lessons over and over. I’m grateful that I don’t have to live without God’s steady flow of wisdom.
