the practice of daily affirmation + affirmations printable

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend a conference for women leaders. The founder, Cherelle Johnson, formed her organization with the goal of empowering Christian women to achieve their goals and offer their unique gifts and talents to the world. Several of the speakers, including Pastor Chris Johnson, spoke of the importance of the words you speak to yourself and encouraged the practice of daily affirmations. I was really inspired by the potential of that practice. I think...

Shine as lights + Philippians 2:14-16 Coloring page in English & Spanish

I’ve been thinking and reading a lot about the church in America recently, especially through this last election season. When I observe the American church, I see some Christian speaking prophetically and faithfully. I see some grasping for political power, justifying whatever means for what is seen as a desirable end. Some go to war with the culture against the radical “other” on the other side. I see others withdraw into Christian “bubbles,” isolated from the culture of the...

A morning prayer coloring page (in English & Spanish)

Hello friends! I’ve told you before that I grew up in a mostly Southern Baptist church tradition, so I wasn’t raised using the traditional liturgy of the ancient Christian church. I recently got a copy of the Book of Common Prayer and have been blessed by the daily Psalms reading and other prayers. I find these practices useful in difficult times when it feels hard to prayer “on my own,” when the world feels heavy, and when I’m easily...

Paint with me Watercolor Tutorial with Vintage Bird Template

My son joined me for a simple little tutorial today! One of my favorite paintings in the home is a watercolor sketch I did on a page from a book about blackbirds (pictured below). I thought this would be a fun project to share with you! Full disclosure: I didn’t plan on him joining me, but we rolled with it. He did so well, and even said he thought his painting was better than mine!  You’ll need the following: jar...

I’ve been wanting to share a printable of the Lord’s Prayer with you and with my own children for a while now, and here it is! It seems so very appropriate to share it now as we welcome a new year with all the hopes and fears it holds for us. I don’t claim to be an example of a prayerful woman. I’m more of a grasping the hem of His garment kind of a pray-er, so I share...

Let’s talk about anti-racism: things I never understood (Part 1) + Acts 17:26 Bible Verse Coloring Page

I hope you were able to watch the video of my introduction to this new series on anti-racism in my last post.  I’ve been doing a lot of reading and writing to prepare for these next few posts on the things I never understood about racism.  At the end of today’s post, I’m sharing a coloring page from Acts 17:26 (in English and Spanish), along with some talking points you can use with your kids when starting the conversation...

Paint with me! Spring floral tutorial + printable template

It’s been SO cold here in Virginia this last week, so today I’m dreaming of sun and Spring flowers as I sit under my sun lamp trying to make up for my lack of Vitamin D (and general sense of joy). Do you remember my first watercolor tutorial (you can find the first it HERE)? Today I had a lot of fun recording a second super simple watercolor tutorial video. There’s also a free printable template you can use with...

Garden Living + a 2 Corinthians 6:16 Bible Coloring Page in English and Spanish

Sometimes, I think it’s important to take a big step back out of the busyness of life, and ask the big picture questions. What is God doing here? What am I doing here? When we frame life in God’s big picture, then the day-to-day takes on a different color, a deeper joy, and a rediscovered purpose–without changing our actual circumstances one little bit. Here’s a big picture truth: God has a kingdom and he’s calling you and me to...

This episode of The Pictured Word Podcast is Chapt This episode of The Pictured Word Podcast is Chapter 3 of the Jesus Speaks to Women Series on the words Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well, found in John 4:1-42. You can listen on the Marydean Draws Substack page or on most podcast apps.
❤️
In this study, I examine the common assumptions we often hear about this story, provide important cultural context, and try to understand what the conversation between Jesus and the woman, the longest recorded between Jesus and anyone in the Gospels, is actually about.

❤️Welcome to The Pictured Word podcast, where I look at Scripture through a curious writer and artist’s eyes, draw on the beauty found in the tradition of Christian art, and learn from the insight of Biblical scholarship. Whether you come to the Bible weary, wounded, or wondering, my goal is to help you see the Jesus revealed there.

This print in my newest collection of hymn prints This print in my newest collection of hymn prints is a really special one and the first time I've made a horizontal print. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by James Weldon Johnson and his brother Rosamond Johnson was written in 1900 and became known as the “Negro National Hymn” or “Negro National Anthem.” You might recognize it as the song that opens the Super Bowl each year. James Johnson was an educator, lawyer, and author, and his brother Rosamond was an accomplished musician. You can read more about the brothers in the post I wrote about them below.

Here's the link to the print that comes in 8x10" and 11x14":

I'm wondering what you've been taught or have assumed about her and the point of her extensive conversation with Jesus. Through studying this story, I've changed my mind about most of my previous assumptions! Podcast episode coming this week on The Pictured Word Podcast!
