To live is Christ

You know how you read God’s Word, but it doesn’t really sink in? You’re thinking, I know this is really profound, but it just isn’t changing my life right now. What am I doing wrong? I feel like that a lot. But God’s Word is not a dead book for me to figure out all by myself: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of...

Conversations with my three year old: Volume 2

More from my middle child (If you missed the first installment, you can check it out here): . . . Anna: “My little girl needs to be feeded. She likes her mommy’s bottle.” (And proceeds to sit on the rocking chair next to mine and nurse her baby just like mommy). . . . Anna: “What’s that smell in the air? Oh, I forgot. It’s my baby. She pooped in her diaper.” (Three year olds love the word “poop.”)...

Losing myself Part 2: Losing & Finding Myself in Bangkok, Thailand

In 2000, I had graduated and completed four years at a wonderfully small Christian college (Gardner-Webb University), full of cherished friends, late-night talks, movie nights with lots of M&M’s . . . and, oh, a wonderful education too.  But they didn’t let me stay once I finished my degree, so I was cruelly catapulted into the real world of student loans, work, and living in the dark corner of my parent’s unfinished basement. For me, this was a recipe...

Baby Silas & Conversations with my three year old

Well, baby brother has finally arrived and we are loving him! Silas James was born last week and we are all in the throes of adjusting to life with five, each in our own way. We are keeping a newborn’s sleeping schedule and spending lots of time staring at this sweet face. It’s noon andI’m still in jammies as I write and nurse this guy. The girls are watching Wild Kratts, their current favorite, My now-middle child has a...

All the little nows

“Forever is composed of nows,” wrote Emily Dickinson. My life is made up of these nows that make up forever, so I thought I’d share a collection of recent ones today. This collection reminds me that, although my life seems mostly crazy and challenging, it is full of beauty to celebrate and thank God for. Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” my drawing princess  I think there’s some theology...

Welcome to the blog!

I’m Mary and I’m glad you’re here! Since 2014, I’ve been sharing encouraging words, fun Bible printables, and accessible art activities.

let’s talk about . . .

SEARCH THE BLOG

In today’s Friday Chat, I’m joined by my frien In today’s Friday Chat, I’m joined by my friend Katie to talk about my Bible study pet peeves and best practices for leading Bible studies. We have both led and been part of small group Bible studies for many years, and we talk about how our ideas about the purpose of Bible study have changed over the years.

We discuss the importance of letting the Bible be complex, keeping Jesus at the center, dealing with the fear of the discussions going off the rails, and Katie’s hot take on the importance of actually praying in our small groups. You’ll also get to hear Katie’s answer to the question, “Is Jesus a Republican or a Democrat?”

It’s a wide-ranging discussion that I found really helpful and challenging. You might agree or disagree with us, but that’s okay, because that’s the point we’re making. Hope you enjoy the discussion!
