at the end of a bad day + print giveaway

I impressed myself this morning. I was the mom I know I can be if I just pull it together. I didn’t yell ALL morning. I controlled my twitches of anger when one little miss took almost two hours to stuff a pile of clean clothes in her dresser. I used my best calm mommy voice. I let them paint. Post-nap I let myself down. I blame it on the new sprinkler, which was supposed to be highly entertaining....

Grace for the Growing

My five-month is in a funny stage. He just learned to turn over and can’t stop now, even though he really doesn’t like to sleep that way yet. There’s been a lot of crying and training this last week. My four-year-old is in a stage too (oh my). She insists on “big sister rest time” now and wants to give up naps, but by five in the evening, she’s an emotional mess (and so am I). If she gets worn...

Printable Scripture Coloring Page: John 1:12

Hi friends!  I have another memory verse printable coloring page for you! You can see them all here. You can ask your kids (or adults!) a few questions about this verse: What’s required of us to become children of God? (receive Him/believe on His name–remember that the faith to do this is a gift as Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us) What is the gift that we get from God? What does it mean that you get the right to become...

Just a child

Do you know those moments when you’re faced with your own brokenness and failures? Other than my daily flops and flounderings in mommying, nothing makes me face this more than a good ‘ol argument with my husband. We don’t argue often anymore (our first few months as Mr. and Mrs. were a bit of a doozy), but there are still times when we completely miscommunicate.  This happened recently. We felt and saw the same situation totally differently and ended...

Missing the Heart

My husband texted me a simple question while he was at dance class with our girls last Saturday morning: “Would you be okay if I went to play golf this afternoon?” Our two-month-old was going through a bit of a growth spurt and I didn’t get great sleep the night before. I was also feeling a little emotional, and my head hurt from all the wonderful blooming going on outside. I felt I should say “yes,” because that’s what a...

Relational Grace: Loving Amidst the Renovations

You know those things you see in a friend or a spouse that if you could just put your finger on them, you think they’d be fixed? Or that fault in your spouse that, if he’d only listen to you, all would be well? I can easily pick them out in others and I’m sure they can just as easily pick them out in me. So, here we are, trying to live in grace, but we’re still such a...

Something weird happened last night: reflections from an MRI machine

First of all, Baby Boy is fine and kicking. I’m fine too, and I have the brain scans to prove it! The thought occurred later that I should have asked them if they could tell if I was super-smart . . . but I forgot. Yesterday was a weird day. I had some unusual vision things going on and numbness in my hands in the afternoon. The doctor couldn’t diagnose over the phone so around 9:00 my husband and...

Present Grace

Charitie Lees Bancroft wrote a beautiful hymn called “Before the Throne of God Above.” One of my pastors at church recently quoted it, and this line struck me:  Before the throne of God aboveI have a strong, a perfect plea;A great High Priest whose name is LoveWho ever lives and pleads for me.Isn’t that a beautiful thought? At the point that your are most ashamed, most caught in your own fallenness, your selfishness, your failings, Jesus is interceding for you...
