My kindergarten son and I recorded a tutorial for a fun cool and warm color study abstract. You can tell he wasn’t thrilled to join me, but he ended up really happy with his creation and it’s now framed in his room.
I love seeing kids respond to art. I also love projects that have enough guidance that they don’t feel overwhelmed, but also enough freedom that they can create something unique to them.
Instructions and a materials list are after the video.
Materials
First grab these supplies (Amazon links are associate links*):
- watercolor paints (we are using an old tray set from Michael’s)
- brushes + water
- thick paper or watercolor paper. We are using this watercolor paper* from Amazon. It’s thin and doesn’t take much water or scrubbing, but it works for the kids’ projects.
- chalk pastels for layering (or Nupastels if you have them)
- optional: fixative spray to seal sealing your painting and prevent smudging
Instructions
- Start by drawing lines in pencil.
- between your lines, add shapes in cool colors
- add pops of warm colors
- add a layer of pastels in coordinating and contrasting colors
Observe:
How do the colors “play together”?
Which color combinations did you like best?
What areas of the painting are your favorite?
If you tried this again, what would you want to do differently?
Tag me if you share on social media so we can see what you create!
