I am creating a series of art and poems based on the words Jesus spoke to women. This poem is based on the account of Jesus’ words spoken to his mother, Mary, when he was on the cross found in John 19:25-27.
This is the artwork I created for this poem:
You can hear me read this poem here:
my heart has been
full of him
and the yes I gave
the God I could not see
be to me according
to your word
letting go since my womb
could not keep him
since I thought I lost him
when he stayed where he belonged
didn’t you know I would be in my Father’s house?
but I have fought
the coming of this hour
revolting at its injustice
with the sun itself
it is just before
the finish now
thirsty and gasping,
he see me and John:
“Woman, behold, your son!”
a new son given
for me
my task complete
as his is accomplished
my good son
loving me to the end
and the sword in his heart
finally pierces mine through
